Solution to PS 1 #16
The region of the mRNA molecule upstream of the true initiation
codon contains the purine rich Shine-Dalgarno sequence, which is complimentary
to a pyrimidine rich sequence at the 3'end of the 16S rRNA component on
the 30S ribosomal subunit. By correctly poitioningh the 30C subunit on
the mRNA transcript, the Shine Dalgarno sequence allows fMet-tRNAiMet
to bind to the initiation codon. Once protein synthesis begins, all subsequent
Met codons are recognized by Met-tRNAMet.
