Community Service
2004 – present: Consultant and Expert Witness
One of the community service experiences of which I am most proud has been my role as a consultant and expert witness for Gary A. Abraham, Esq., representing the Concerned Citizens of Cattaraugus County, Incorporated in the matter of the Integrated Waste Systems (IWS) NYSDEC Application ID # 9-0438-00004/00014 Proposed Southern Tier Solid Waste Management Facility, colloquially known as the Farmersville Landfill.  I examined the hydrogeological model produced by consultants for IWS, evaluating the models assumptions. I also assessed other environmental issues associated with the proposed site of the landfill, including identifying possible hazards associated with the hydric soils located at the toe of the proposed landfill cell sites.
Students in two of my Environmental Field Methods courses assisted in gathering various types of background material (soil survey maps, Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) for nearby projects, and newspaper articles IWS) and produced formal letters describing their findings that were submitted to the DEC at one of the public meetings held in Farmerville. Gary Abrahams, the attorney for the Concerned Citizens of Cattaraugus County, also addressed the class one year, providing the students with an example of how a lawyer views and presents scientific data. The following students deserve enormous credit for their work on the Farmersville project: Jennifer Kelly, Peter Fearon, Victoria Goodenough, Anthony Kellogg, Sarah Whittle, and Jeffery Cooper.

2006 – present: Consultant
I am acting as an unpaid consultant for a citizens action group interested in maintaining oversight of the proposed Chaffee Landfill Expansion.  Basically my role is to point out potential areas of concern and help evaluate the proposed groundwater monitoring network.

2004, 2005, 2006: Volunteer and Scurvy Pirate
Each year, when possible I have helped with the Penn Dixie “Scare-assic Park ! A Pirate Adventure” fund raiser and the Brass Ring Thing fundraiser for the Carrousel Museum in Tonawanda.  Usually with site logistics, but also demonstrating various forms of fencing (with swords, not chain-link.)

2002-2004: I was an officer in a national not-for-profit, historical re-enactment fencing program and was responsible for overseeing activities in western New York, western Pennsylvania and West Virginia.  In 2003, I initiated a program for youth age 14 - 18 to participate in re-enactment fencing.  This is a sports program similar to FIE “Olympic-style” fencing, but training is free and the program is run by volunteers.
