a) Oxygen consumption is a measure of the activity of the first
two stages of cellular respiration: glycolysis and the citric acid cycle.
The addition of oxaloacteate or malate stimulates the citric acid cycle
and thus stimulate respiration.
b) The added oxaloacetate or malate serves a catalytic role, becuase
it is regenerated in the latter part of the citric acid cycle.
