About This Series Breaking Out of the Box ©2000 Elaine Polvinen, MFA,
Associate Professor My current area of aesthetic research is in digital design and digital textile printing. "Breaking Out of the Box" is an explorative, aesthetic, and educational design series that represents an overlapping and integration of art, design, technology, fashion and textiles. All prints are digitally created. Some were based on a collage of sections of photographic imagery, others were based on original artwork that was scanned in to the computer and manipulated while others were purely digital in nature. The computer was utilized as a tool in the creative process to develop a series of prints that manifest the endeavor of the creative spirit to grow and change. This educational series consists of sixteen 20 x 26 inch framed and matted prints digitally developed and printed on Inkjet canvas cloth. These digital print designs have also been reinterpreted for a series of art fabrics that are yardage's of silk fabric that have been printed on a Mutoh 43" Epson piezo head printer using the Wasatch Textile Edition RIP with Jacquard color management. The silk yardage (Jacquard inkjet Fabric Silk Habotai) for each design was digitally printed with Jacquard Silk Inkjet Fabric Ink. This educational print and art fabric series has exhibited at Rochester Institute of Technology (Rochester, NY, USA), Windows at 1305 Gallery, Feb 5th through Feb 25th, 2000, and has traveled to The Gallery Downstairs at New Brunswick College of Craft and Design (New Brunswick, Canada), March 15th through April 10th, 2000. This installation has recently been exhibited at the Ann Genet Gallery at Syracuse University from September 1st to October 13th, 2000.
