While implicit in the College Mission and Strategic Plan and Intellectual Foundations Mission and Guiding Principles, community service requires an academic and administrative structure of its own. There are many ways to weave public service into the fabric of Buffalo State. Further study is needed. The Committee recommends empaneling an ad hoc Community Service Committee
1.
All students who graduate from Buffalo State College should be required to have performed at least 20-30 hours of community service. This requirement may be fulfilled via:
a.
Volunteer service,
b.
A service learning course, or
c.
A community service internship
2.
A non-credit notation of community service should be placed on each student's official transcript.
3.
Implementation of any community service proposal would require a dedicated administrative structure outside of the Intellectual Foundations Center. Specific proposals for a College center for community outreach, service learning and volunteer activities should be brought before the College Senate
4.
A requirement of this type should take effect only after the College Senate certifies that an adequately staffed, appropriate administrative structure exists.
