Students will be required to complete one course that conveys a basic narrative of American history in its many dimensions. A significant portion of each course in this category shall address learning outcomes that explicitly reference the diversity of the American people and experience.
Informational Memo: The following has already been approved by the College Senate as part of the GE2K Assessment Plan.
a.
Students will demonstrate knowledge of a basic narrative of American history: political, economic, social and cultural, including unity and diversity in American society.
i.
Students will understand the origins and development of the political, economic, social and cultural institutions of the United States and the foles that they have played in American life.
ii.
Students will understand the origins of the racialn and ethnic diversity of the American people.
b.
Students will demonstrate knowledge of common institutions in American society and how they have affected different groups.
i.
Students will understand the origins and development of the political, economic, social and cultural institutions of the United States and the roles that they have played in American life.
ii.
Students will understand the impact of race, class, ethnicity and gender on the development of the American people.
c.
Students will demonstrate understanding of America's evolving relationship with the rest of the world.
i.
Students will understand the process by which the United States expanded its territorial boundaries.
ii.
Students will understand the emergence of the U.S. as a world power.
a.
Each courses must meet all learning outcomes for American History foundational courses
b.
A significant portion of all foundational courses in American History shall address learning outcomes that explicitly reference the diversity of the American people and experience.
c.
All foundational courses in American History must be lower-division courses.
d.
American History foundational courses maynot be listed in anyother IF category (e.g., a course cannot be both a Foundational course in the Social Sciences Cognate area and in American History)
The IFOC shall form an ad hoc committee in Spring, 2003, with the following charge:
a.
The committee shall review and revise the existing Buffalo State College Learning Outcomes/Objectives for Foundations in American History.
b.
Ensure that critical thinking learning outcomes are clearly and explicitly included among the learning outcomes.
c.
Establish content-based criteria for inclusion (and exclusion) of courses as American History foundational courses, that make no reference to the administrative structure (e.g., Department or Faculty) at Buffalo State College or elsewhere.
d.
Complete work by October, 2003.
e.
All committee recommendations are subject to ratification by the IFOC and the College Senate Curriculum Committee and may be appealed via established procedures to the College Senate Curriculum Committee.
