The transcript of each rRNA molecule is directly incorporated into
a ribosome. Thus, multiple copies of rRNA genes are needed to assemble
the large number of ribosomes that the cell requires. In contrast,
the transcript of each ribosomal protein gene is an mRNA that can be translated
many times. Because of amplification of RNA to protein, fewer genes
are needed for each ribosomal protein than for rRNA.
